Uprima Frequent Asked Questions
What is Uprima?Uprima (Apomorphine) is the most recent drug on the market designed to help men overcome erectile dysfunction (ED), otherwise known as impotency. As with Viagra, Uprima can help many men who have erectile dysfunction achieve and maintain an erection when they become sexually stimulated, either physically or visually.
What is the difference between Viagra and Uprima?Recent tests indicate very little difference between the success ratings of these two drugs. However, the main difference is the speed at which the two drugs get to work, largely caused by the way in which they are absorbed into the bloodstream. Viagra tablets are swallowed and therefore must be digested. As such, it can take anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour to take effect. Uprima, on the other hand, is absorbed under the tongue, directly entering the blood stream and allowing patients to achieve an erection in 20 minutes or less. The effects of Uprima also last for longer than Viagra. The effects will of course vary between patients.
How does Uprima work?Despite its similarities to Viagra, Uprima is the first clinically tested and medically approved oral treatment which works by activating chemicals in the brain. Uprima tablets are dissolved under the tongue which triggers the chemical dopamine, starting the signal for an erection. Following sexual stimulation, Uprima increases the levels of nitric oxide in the body dilating blood vessels and encouraging more blood to flow to the penis. It also helps transmit electrical impulses from the brain through the spinal cord, which in turn improves blood flow to the penis. As the penis muscle relaxes, the pelvic arteries widen, filling with blood and making the penis erect.
How do I know which drug is more suitable for my needs? As both drugs are similar in their effects the decision of which one is more suitable is very much down to the individual. As Uprima is dissolved under the tongue, it may suit patients who are uncomfortable taking tablets. However, as with any drug, you should consult your healthcare provider to establish your individual needs.
How do I take Uprima? It is suggested that you take Uprima approximately 20 minutes before sexual activity takes place. To help the tablet dissolve properly, it is a good idea to first drink a glass of water to assist the process. After taking the water, the tablet should be placed under the tongue letting it slowly dissolve - this usually takes about 10 minutes. Sexual stimulation is required for the drug to take effect, and for an erection to be achieved.
Will Uprima work immediately and how quickly does it work?Uprima has been clinically proven to start acting within 15-30 minutes - two to three times faster than Viagra. Recent studies have shown that following the administration of Uprima 34% of erections were reached within 10 minutes and 71% within 20 minutes.
Does Uprima automatically cause an erection? No. With Uprima you must be sexually aroused to get an erection. It is not an aphrodisiac. It's a prescription medication that can improve erectile function in most men with erection problems.
How much Uprima can I take?Uprima is available in 2 and 3 mg doses. When taking Uprima for the first time, it is recommended that the patient begin with a 2mg dose, increasing this to 3mg if necessary. The dosage does not need to be altered for elderly patients.
How often can I take Uprima? For most patients, Uprima should be taken once a day as required. Patients must only take one tablet in an eight-hour period and no more than 3 tablets in 24 hours.
Who should not take Uprima?Uprima is only for patients with ED. Uprima is not prescribed for women or children. Do not let anyone else take your Uprima. Uprima must be used only on prescription. Before you start any treatment with Uprima, be sure to ask your healthcare provider if your heart is healthy enough. Those who suffer from acute angina, recent myocardial infarction, severe heart failure, or any other condition where sexual activity is not recommended, should not take Uprima. Uprima should be used with caution in patients suffering from severely impaired renal or hepatic functions. Uprima should not be taken in conjunction with other centrally-active dopamine agonists or antagonists due to the possibility of pharmacodynamic interactions. It should also be taken with caution by patients taking hypertensives or nitrate medications. Nitrates are found in many prescription medicines that are used to treat angina (chest pain due to heart disease) such as: Nitroglycerin (sprays, ointments, skin patches or pastes, and tablets that are swallowed in the mouth) Isosorbide mononitrate and isosorbide dinitrate (tablets that are swallowed, chewed or dissolved in the mouth) Nitrates are found in recreational drugs such as amyl nitrate or nitrate ("poppers"). If you are not sure if any of your medications contain nitrates, or if you do not understand what nitrates are, ask your healthcare provider. If you suffer from any of these conditions, it is recommended that you talk to your healthcare provider before taking Uprima. It is not recommended that patients take Uprima in conjunction with other ED treatments.
What are the side effects of Uprima? The side effects from taking Uprima are very similar to those of Viagra. The most commonly found ones are headache, dizziness and nausea - with dizziness occurring in approximately 4% of patients, and nausea and headache occurring in approximately 7% of patients. Nausea is usually mild to moderate, and tends to dissipate with prolonged use of the drug. Other adverse side effects include: infection; pain; flushing; taste disorder; sweating; yawning; rhinitus; pharyngitis, somnolence, increased cough. However, such side effects tend to be mild and short-lived.
Can I take Uprima with alcohol?Intake of alcohol whilst taking Uprima may cause an increase the possibility of hypotension (low blood pressure). Equally, alcohol may reduce sexual performance.
Will Uprima affect my ability to drive/operate machinery? If you experience headaches or dizziness after taking Uprima, it is advised that you do not perform activities such as driving for a minimum of two hours after taking the drug, or until the symptoms have subsided.
Can I overdose on Uprima? If taken in large doses, Uprima may cause vomiting. If an overdose is taken, it is recommended that blood pressure and heart rate are closely monitored.
What if Uprima doesn't work?As with any drug, the effectiveness of Uprima may differ between patients. If it doesn't work for you, contact your healthcare provider to discuss other treatment options.
Will Uprima make me have an erection for hours?Uprima works by helping you get an erection in response to sexual stimulation. Once a man takes Uprima and has sex, his erection will go away after intercourse, just like it would normally. I don't get erectile dysfunction often. Does this mean that Uprima isn't for me? Even if it happens infrequently, it's still erectile dysfunction (ED). Most men with ED have it just some of the time.
I tried Uprima once and it didn't work. Does this mean that it's not for me?You might need to try Uprima several times to get it right for you. You may also need to change your dose (within the specified guidelines).
What if I haven't had sex for a while? As sexual activity can be demanding on the heart, doctors sometimes determine that for men with certain heart conditions, sex is not recommended, with or without medication for erectile dysfunction. Patients who are in poor cardiovascular health should talk to their doctor before engaging in any strenuous activity. If you are not sure of your cardiovascular health, talk to your healthcare provider.
